Learning from people in poverty
Question: when you see or hear about people changing churches, do you wonder if they’ve got commitment issues with church, or a consumerist attitude, or are just flaky?
I’ve definitely thought all of those things over the years, but a Jubilee+ Voices focus group totally changed my perspective. Taking the time to listen to a group of people who are currently in poverty, or have very recently come out of it, I learnt that sometimes people ‘church hop’, as I used to call it, because they know that Jesus wants them in His family, and they are desperate to find a church that feels that way about them too.
Over the past two years Jubilee+ leadership team member Rosie Hopley has been leading J+ Voices groups around the country, and learning from participants keen to shape church-based social action for the better.
Rosie has distilled that learning into our 19 Insights from People in Poverty booklet, which tells you what we did, how we did it and why we ran Voices. Most importantly, the booklet shares with you some of the key findings and recommendations which emerged from these gatherings, born out of individual stories and experiences of what it's really like to access church and church-based social action.
The 19 Insights from People in Poverty booklet is available here. We trust you'll find the insights as helpful and provoking as we have.
